Astilbe is a shade tolerant perennial also known as False Goatsbeard or False Spirea. They can be used as a focal point

in a woodland garden, or can be planted in mass. They are not widely used around Charlotte, but grow well in this area as long as they are kept away from direct afternoon sunlight. Astilbes are in bloom right now and make an excellent cut flower. They come in a handful of colors and heights and are very effective at adding eye catching color to any shade garden. They look their best when used with other shade perennials such as Hostas, Heucheras, and Ferns.
