Pennisetum, which is also known as fountain grass, is native to the tropical and warm temperate regions of the world. There are 80-140 species of Pennisetum and they are used for a variety of purposes. The ornamental species that are typically used in landscaping are perennial plants that have a mature size of 2-3 feet high. In the middle of summer they start to bloom and when August comes around they look spectacular. If a non-invasive, drought resistant perennial is needed to offer a softening texture to a mixed planting, look no further than Pennisetum.
